I got the email today. For privacy reasons, I’ve erased personal information from the acceptance letter, but I still want to share this milestone. It’s bittersweet that it arrived today, just after the recent passing of my former advisor and dear friend, who was with me on this journey from the very beginning.
The path wasn’t linear—I was rejected the first time I applied. But this time, I came back better than ever, with an improved GPA and the additional math and science classes I needed.
When I first started this blog, I wrote a post about how people like me don’t go to college and how I was scared to become a college student. Teen me would have never imagined ending up here. It felt like a completely different world back then, but now, I know and feel that I belong in this world, thanks in no small part to myself and those who have supported me along the way.
Below is the acceptance letter.
As I opened the email, confetti exploded on the screen, making the moment feel even more real and celebratory.

Also, I went to the store for some celebration cake and our favorite store employee at our local Thriftway bought us cakes to celebrate. I picked a lemon drop cheesecake slice, and the teen chose a classic New York cheesecake slice.
